China Receives Over One Million Invention Patent Applications in 2015

Statistics of China’s Patent Application in 2015

 

According to the latest data released by China’s State Intellectual Property Office (SIPO), about 1,102,000 patent applications for invention were received by SIPO in 2015, up 18.7% in comparison with 928,000 in 2014. This is the 5th straight year that China tops the amount of invention patent application in the world. Besides, 350,900 patents were granted by the Office in 2015, with 263,000 patents from domestic applicants, up 61.9% from 2014.

 

In 2015, the top 10 provinces (or municipalities) in terms of number of granted patents in China (exclusive of Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan) are: Jiangsu, Beijing, Guangdong, Zhejiang, Shanghai, Shandong, Anhui, Sichuan, Hubei and Shaanxi.


In 2015, the top 10 enterprises in terms of number of granted patents in China (exclusive of Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan) are: China Petroleum & Chemical Corporation, ZTE Corporation, Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd., State Grid Corporation of China, BOE Technology Group Co., Ltd., Shenzhen China Star Optoelectronics Technology Co., Ltd, PetroChina Company Limited, Zoomlion Heavy Industry Science & Technology Co. Ltd., Tencent Technology (Shenzhen) Company Limited, and BYD Company Limited.

 

In 2015, SIPO received a total of 30,548 PCT applications, up 16.7% from 2014. Among these PCT filings, 20,399 were from domestic applicants, accounting for 93.0% of the total and up 18.3% from 2014. As for the regional distribution, Guangdong Province ranks the first place with 15,190 PCT filings, followed by Beijing, Jiangsu, Shanghai and Zhejiang. The above 5 provinces (or municipalities) shared almost 85% of the total PCT filings in China.

 

Main Features for China’s Patent Application in 2015


    Number of applications for invention patents received by SIPO exceeded one million  for the first time;

    By the end of 2015, every 10,000 people in China held 6.3 invention patents;

    In China, enterprises were still the dominant in IP innovation;

    In comparison with the other countries, China still has a long way to go, especially in some technical fields such as optics and engine.
